Devastated by a massive 7.8 magnitude earthquake in 1931 and still considered the most tragic disaster in New Zealand. With the 261 lives this quake took it also gave back 2230 hectares (5575 acres) of land when after 2 minutes of shaking the Napier area tilted upwards, a maximum of 7 feet (just over 2 metres).
After the quake Napier was rebuilt and today Napier boasts the largest concentration of buildings in the styles of the 1930s: Art Deco, Spanish Mission and Stripped Classical in the world.
Hawke’s Bay is also known around the world for its stunning food and wine. With over 100 vineyards and 80 wineries, many with cellar doors and restaurants producing over 80 percent of the countries Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon and Syrah grapes. You won’t have to look far to find a world class high quality red wine. Hawke’s Bays warm climate and fertile soils also produce New Zealand’s richest and most complex Chardonnays.
